You can’t specifically target fat on your hips, buttocks and thighs

This week I’ve had two conversations with women who want to lose stomach fat. They are convinced that sit ups, crunches and other abdominal exercises can cause them this fat loss. Unfortunately this is not the case – there’s no such thing as localised fat loss.

With all the ‘targeted’ fat loss products available, shown all over TV, I’m not surprised so many people believe in the ability to target fat loss to a specific area! There are many products available, there’s something for your abs, your bingo wings and your thighs…

I’m sure many of us wish targeted fat loss was possible, but it’s been scientifically proven for many years that you absolutely cannot target fat loss to a specific area of the body. So sadly, no amount of sit ups are going to show you your abs and no amount of adductor machine exercises will remove your stubborn thigh fat…


Arnold Schwarzenegger, seven-times Mr. Olympia winner, actually wrote in his ‘The New Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding’, “When the body begins metabolising fat for energy, it doesn’t go to an area where the muscles are doing a lot of work to get additional energy resources.” This basically means you don’t burn up the fat where you are exercising the muscles!
